FOOTSCRAY ON THE EDGE is a first of its kind public art festival initiated by the City of Maribyrnong as part of its Spring/Summer 2012 Festival City Program. This festival promises to further activate central Footscray through the spectacular photographic images of Grant Hobson in the F5: Footscray in Transition exhibition; the technically complex marriage between art and engineering of Myths and Legends; Western Lights transformative projections on the façade of Town Hall; and the provocative and socially engaging artworks created through a collaboration between local artists and Kendal Henry as part of the Artist in Residence Program.

Suspension of Disbelief
Michael Brennan
Endpoints capture us. They demand our attention.
They’re the space of definition –where recognition is shared, specifics are pinned down and discrimination is provided a holding pen. They are the fixed and the signposted – a delineated position. Black and white. Us and them. Useful tools, but they exclude so much. And they’re easier to think about than the span in between.
This in-between space is where the real story lies. It’s the fleshy bit. Where things fold back on themselves and dichotomies intertwine. It’s a space that requires the setting aside of presumed facts and personal truths. To shift, crossover and collaborate. A mutable, sometimes scary space where footing is unsure, but one that embraces the diaspora and banishes narrowness to the outer extremes.
This is a space where a journey occurs. It’s where possibility resides and change takes place. Where we recognise the perspectives of others and the plurality of ourselves. This is where things can cease being things and ideas hang free.
